Closer Look At iOS 9 From WWDC 2015
iOS 9 was announced by Apple at its annual World Wide Develops Conference (WWDC) on June 8, 2015 in California. Made available to developers straight away after the announcement, the iOS 9 is forecasted to release in September 2015. We are here to have a closer look at iOS 9 and why the users need an upgrade to it. The new OS for smartphones and tablets comes with wide range of improvements and new features. There were prominent updates to Siri, with Proactive Suggestions. There were bold improvements in built-in apps, with another gift for iPad users; the multitasking split-screen. The new OS has also OS system updates, like security and battery options.
Now get ready! Because we are going to discuss these features in detail and why you should download it!
Siri has become more intelligent in iOS 9. Now, you don’t need to worry about the context of your speech. If you are reading a message and you command Siri to, “Remind me about it, tomorrow” then, Siri will impressively understand without you saying the word ‘message’.
You can, now, search your photos or videos based on date, month, year and locations. All you have to say is “Show me photos of March 2015” and there you will have it.
We're not finished yet. Siri is now aware of your location. If you tell Siri to “Text Dave about last night when I reach home”, then you can bet that Siri understood every word of it and will perform the task when you reach home. Yeah, it’s also a little scary. We mean, it knows everything.
The improvements of Siri are really satisfying, but we have got slight glimpses of Google Now in it. Don’t be alarmed though, because we will call it inspiration.
According to Apple, the new OS is more ‘Intelligent’ due to the inclusion of Proactive Suggestion. The Proactive Suggestions feature is like a buddy, who understands you and your needs. For instance, if you check your emails right after you wake up in the morning, the Proactive Suggestions will record your habit. When it becomes your routine, your mail will be opened automatically when you will use your device in the morning.
If you always use Maps for traffic information and all while going to the office in the morning, then Proactive Suggestions will make it happen to open the map automatically at that specific time.
Although, no one repeats everything they do every day, but still the Proactive Suggestions is genuinely a stellar feature. It makes your device more than just a machine – It makes the device your best friend!
Enhanced Built-in Apps
The built-in apps in iOS 9 have been improved considerably. We have discussed here some major apps:
News: Apple is looking ambitious because News is a very new app in iOS 9. It simply gathers news from all the sources it can get its hands on. It also gives you options to select your preference about sources.
News also has offline option, so you don’t need to stay online for all the readings.
Maps: There is good news for you. Now, you don’t need to use third-party transit app because Apple Maps is now able to do the task with charm. Now you can find a route from Maps, where you can reach a train station and hop into one.
Health: With the improvements in health measurements, the new addition in iOS 9 is the reproductive health measurement. The much-awaited feature monitors your menstruation, body temperature levels and more.
The improved apps are going to work flawlessly on iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S along with all the others.
The apps are filled with many surprises. iOS 9 has tried hard to give more accessibility to users and have succeeded in most cases.
Split Screen in iPad
There are three multitasking features in iOS 9 Slide Over, Split View, and Pictures in Picture for the iPad. However, the Split View simultaneous mode will only for the iPad Air 2.
The Slide over View gives you a split screen with one app having 75% screen and the other app having 25% screen space. But this feature is not really multi-tasking because only one app is active at a given time.
The Split View is a cut to the core split screen feature. It gives both the apps 50-50 percent screen space and makes it possible for both apps to be active at the same time. Hence, true multitasking!
The Pictures in Picture feature makes you use apps when you are using FaceTime or watching a video.
Although, this feature should have been added in the previous update of OS, but maybe Apple was not really giving attention to it. Thankfully, now we have it!
OS System Updates
There are also some stunning system updates in iOS 9, like Battery life options, less installation size, and improved security.
Battery Life Options: The battery options are improved drastically in iOS 9. Apple has seemingly put lot of effort to churn out methods to save battery life, and the efforts paid off well. With the new feature of Battery options, the iPhone will work an extra hour with ‘normal’ battery settings.
The much anticipated Low Power Mode is also added to iOS 9. Upon activating, it turns off all the heavy tasks of the device and just keeps running some vital tasks. It certainly helps in battery saving situations.
Less Installation Size: The complaint about iOS 8 may be the 4.58 GB update files, which takes a good part of device’s storage and the case worsens if the storage of the device is only 16 GB. With iOS 9 the updates will be seamless and compact. It will actually take about 1.3 GB to install the updates, which will definitely save lots of storage in devices.
Improved Security: The 4-digit passcode days are gone. With iOS 9 the users can set up a 6-digit passcode. This move is particularly appreciated because there were attempts by hackers to crack the 4-digit passcode. But with a 6-digit passcode, it will become harder for anyone to crack because now 1 million passcode combinations are possible.
iOS 9 is anticipated to be available in September 2015 as a free software update. The new OS is compatible with many Apple devices including the old ones. It will work with iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad mini and later, iPad 2 and later, iPad Air and later, and iPod touch 5th generation.
Yes, I know that Apple Watch works on watchOS, but as a tech geek, I would like to see an Apple Watch running iOS 9, especially the Apple Watch Philippines Version.
The Apple iOS 9 has some pure improvements and additions, with Proactive Suggestions and Siri being the major ones. The cool and fancy features of iOS 9 make it a tempting update for Apple users. The OS has become more live and more of a necessity, which is seemingly the target of Apple.
But the praising of iOS 9 should not stop Apple to come up with even more interesting and out-of-the-box features. The consumers want the device to work for them, when they need it and even when they don’t need it. And I’m sure; Apple understands this psychology of consumers and will continue to produce surprising features.
